What should you blog about?

A lot of people have said to me, “Okay, Staci…I get it that blogging is good for business. The problem is, what the heck am I supposed to blog about?”

I totally get it…it’s really hard at first to figure out what to write about. And, it’s even harder to figure out what to write about that will attract potential customers.

The other day, I received this email:

I feel like tearing my hair out haha ive got my blog www.handcrafthome.com and designing it now before i start adding content.

But i cannot stop thinking about content.

We are predominantly driftwood artists and reclaimed wood artists, we make useful products for the home out of beautiful driftwood and we will be branching out (excuse the pun) into other recycling, upcycling and thrifty handmade products for the home, hence handcrafthome.com.

I think ive identified my ideal customer. Aged between 25 and 45, home owner or someone who takes pride in their rented home. Probably has children, is the decision maker and more likely a woman, lets face it, my wife designs our home haha

But I am a Man, and i have no idea what my ideal customer would want to solve, or read about, especially how to subtly link it to to someone who would then like to purchase one of my products from driftwoodartdesigners.co.uk

Ahhh content is so hard

I dont know how you do it

Lee

I absolutely understand the dilemma. With artwork and craft products, it’s just not that simple to figure out what problem we should be “solving,” or what need we should be satisfying, in order to bring in the right traffic.

When I began to type out a response to Lee, I realized it would be easier to just record what I wanted to say. Even though my reply is geared towards Lee’s specific products, I hope it will give everyone else who is here some ideas, too.

(Oh, by the way, I have a voice that makes me sound twelve. I promise I’m not!)

Here are the links to 2 of the keyword tools I like to use to find blog topic ideas:

And, here is another article I wrote on finding your target customer.

Anyone else have any ideas for Lee? And, if you have any secrets for coming up with post topic ideas for your own handmade business blog, please share…we’d love to hear them. 🙂

    Hi Staci!
Found your blog via a facebook share… THANK YOU SO MUCH for putting all this info out there. I am a graphic designer but the idea of getting a website up and running overwhelms me. You made things simple! NOW I have to get my own site running and finally get off etsy or at least get some traffic to my etsy page! Thanks again!
    🙂

Thanks for this info! Content is my biggest struggle as well. I’m working through a target audience activity, but it’s slow going. I hadn’t heard of Ubersuggest, but will be adding it to my list of tools!
