How to write your posts & pages.

The page and post editor page is where you will write the actual content for the pages and posts of your website. Whether you are adding a new post or page, or editing an existing post or page, the editor is where this is done.

The page editor and the post editor and very similar, and perform mostly the same functions… the main differences are that on a post, you can add categories and tags, and on a page, you would instead choose if you would like to set up a hierarchy (I explained this in THIS video on the differences between posts and pages).

At the top of the editor page, you’ll see a place where you can add the title of your post or page.

Below that is the text/visual editor, where you can add the body of your post or page. This is the main content for your page.

You’ll also see that a permalink has appeared under the title of your page/post. This will be the URL (or address) of this page on the internet. You can edit the “slug” (the section between /and/ at the end of the URL) by clicking the “edit” button beside it, and typing in the words you’d like to use (use your best keywords here!). Don’t forget to click “ok” or the slug will revert back to its original words when you publish or update the page.

At the upper right of the content box, you’ll see 2 tabs that say Visual and Text. Visual will give your content box a “what you see is what you get” view. Text will give you the HTML code view. If you are writing your page in code, use the Text view. If you don’t know code, be sure you’re in the Visual view.

The controls at the top of the Visual Editor are very similar to most text editors (such as Microsoft Word). If you aren’t seeing 2 rows of buttons in your Visual Editor, make sure you have clicked the button at the far right of all of the buttons…. this button is called the “Kitchen Sink” and will open up the rest of the buttons that may have not been showing up for you.

Awesome blog! Do you have any recommendations for aspriing writers? I’m planning to start my own blog soon but I’m a little lost on everything. Would you recommend starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many choices out there that I’m completely overwhelmed .. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hey Melissa! I would definitely recommend WordPress, but only as a self-hosted blog. There is also a way to set it up for free at WordPress.com, but then your website will be YourWebsiteName.Wordpress.com…. I really don’t recommend going that route.

Self-hosted means that you’ve installed WordPress software onto your own domain, through a hosting company of your choice. That sounds TOTALLY confusing, but I promise it really isn’t. I have a video with an overview of how it all works, right here: https://staciannlowry.wpengine.com/2-days-or-less-to-your-own-website/

And then I’ve got lots of other videos that break down all the steps into easy, bite-sized chunks, right here: https://staciannlowry.wpengine.com/website-library/

The reason WHY I recommend a self hosted WordPress site (no matter what type of business you have) is because that way, you actually own your site. Basically, you’re not at anyone else’s mercy. Here’s an article I wrote about this: https://staciannlowry.wpengine.com/your-website-your-empire/

I hope that helps, and thanks! 🙂
